What Happens During a Window Replacement Project? A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
A realistic, step-by-step look at what to expect from the day a crew arrives to the final walkthrough.
Here's what a typical Indianapolis window replacement project actually looks like, from crew arrival to completion.
- Site setup. The crew protects interior floors and furnishings near the work area and sets up any needed exterior equipment.
- Old window removal. The existing sash and, for pocket replacements, the surrounding hardware are removed — the exterior trim and frame typically stay in place.
- Opening inspection. The installer checks the exposed frame for any hidden rot, moisture damage, or square/level issues before proceeding.
- New window installation. The new unit is set, shimmed level and plumb, and secured.
- Insulation and sealing. Gaps around the frame are insulated and sealed to prevent air and water infiltration — this step matters as much as the window product itself for long-term performance.
- Exterior and interior finishing. Caulking, trim work, and any exterior capping are completed.
- Cleanup and walkthrough. Old materials are removed, the area is cleaned, and the installer walks through the finished window's operation with you.
For full-frame replacement, add a step between removal and installation where the frame is taken out down to the studs and any underlying damage is repaired before the new window goes in.

One more thing homeowners ask.
Most installers ask that someone be available at the start and end of the project, though you don't need to supervise continuously throughout — confirm specifics with your installer.
