Awning Windows
Hinged at the top and opening outward from the bottom, awning windows create a small overhang that lets you keep the window cracked open even during light rain — without water getting in.
How awning windows work
A crank mechanism pushes the sash outward from top-mounted hinges, opening from the bottom. The angled opening naturally deflects light rain away from the interior.
Best for
Basements, bathrooms, and spots above other fixed windows or doors where you want ventilation without full exposure — also popular as a smaller accent window paired with a larger picture window.
Pros
- Can stay open during light rain without water intrusion
- Good seal quality similar to casement windows
- Works well as a smaller ventilation window above fixed glass
Tradeoffs to consider
- Limited size — not typically used as a primary, large window
- Opens outward, so placement near walkways needs consideration
