Understanding Window U-Factor
What U-factor actually measures, typical ranges, and why it matters more in Indiana's climate than in milder regions.
U-factor measures the rate of heat transfer through the entire window assembly — glass, frame, and spacer together — expressed in Btu/(hr·ft²·°F). Lower numbers mean less heat escapes, which is the opposite of how R-value insulation ratings work (where higher is better), so it's easy to get the direction confused.
Typical ranges
- Older single-pane windows: often above 1.0
- Standard double-pane (no Low-E): roughly 0.45–0.55
- Double-pane Low-E: roughly 0.22–0.32
- Triple-pane Low-E: roughly 0.15–0.22

Always ask whether a quoted U-factor is for the whole window (glass + frame, the NFRC-standard way to report it) or just the center-of-glass number, which looks better but ignores frame performance and can be misleading in comparisons.
